A Dream He Never Dreamt

Sharing life with every patient breath

Darkness... familiar garbled voices

Liquid dreams in the gentle machine

And the serpentine road breeds choices

- - - -

Eleven thousand, five hundred, and thirteen days…

- - - -

Startled, bewildered, and smiling, he awoke

From a treacherous and vigorous slumber

Grainy motion pictures washed into and stoked

Embers of emotion that made him wonder

A sigh… a lifetime of air escaped his lungs

As the images of where and when crept in

Dusty grade school hallways, mischief, and playgrounds

His Halloween mask swept away with fall winds

Memories of the triumphs drip crimson red,

Recollections of the failures tear a seam,

But the "now" had arrived, baptized by the thread

Of the stunning aura and the smile she beamed

The arduous plight before that day faded

As a new definition of passion grew

Into a symphony of love belated

Two souls had never seen a vision so true

Delivered from a dream that he never dreamt

A blessing, a gift, a healthy obsession

A feeling no mortal could ever invent

The two then commenced a fervent ascension

- - - -

Tomorrow will gently come and go

The luminous tide will groan and roar

But he will never forget the day

She winked back, and then opened the door
