i have recently brought my wedding dress, it took 3 months to arrive. The shop said they had an in house dress maker who could carry out any alterations. The dress maker had completely ruined my dress, there is no way i could where it , i had paid her £100 which i have not had back. The shop let me have there sample which was 1 size to small. The shop paid for more alterations which came to £90 by a different dress maker. However i have approached the shop saying i want £500 compensation, (i had paid £700 for the dress, the shop had given me £100 of the RRP as the dress is £800) as i feel it is there fault. They are saying that they have done what they can and the dress maker is freelance and not employed by the shop therefore i have to take it up with the dressmaker as the shops makes no money from her. Where do i stand. I just feel that i am now going to where a dress that has been tryed on by other people and hanging on a shop rail for a least 3 months. Some one please help asap.

  1. If I were you Id seek legal council and sue.. but remember there's other dresses.. besides whats the most important thing in ur wedding? or marriage? Justice will be served, I understand though so take the tailor to court.. once ur married u know?

  2. This is a legal question.

As the dressmaker is only freelance and not an employee of the shop the shop is not necessarily vicariously liable for her negligence. That would mean that you will need to talk to the dressmaker instead as she is at fault.

Also get some professional legal advice I am only a law student.
