  1. Mathman's answer correct and well explained!

Dawn whoops, depending where you are and time of year the sun could rise and set at North and in another place or time rise and set at South! Generally speaking the sunrises in an EASTERLY direction and sets in a WESTERLY direction.

  2. Looking at the dial of a compass, start from N (North). Go clockwise (towards right). Right at the other end is S (South). Perpendicular to N-S line to the right is the point E (East).

Generally, the compass is marked in degrees in Azimuth (clock wise). So, in degrees, 0 (as also 360) is N, 90 is E, 180 is S & 270 is W.

  3. East is the direction the sun comes up.. West is when it goes down..

Try this to remember.. E for Early Rising.. E for East..

  4. If you're holding a compass, it will point to magnetic north.  If you face the way the compass is pointing, east will be to your right.
