A employee who tried to committ suicide?

what should happen to a employee who tried to kill himself by taking pills and cutting his wrists?should he be allowed to come back to work without going to rehab or having to take a drug test ?

The person is having a very hard time, and what the employer does, depends on what kind of business this is. If he were a police officer or something like this.  the limits are likely to be more.

Assuming that he is not seen as a risk to others at the job, the humane thing to do is allow some time off, and ask for back up from his doctor. The doctor is most familiar with all the circumstances, and should be capable to decide if the patient needs rehab, or normal outpatient treatment.

The fact that he tried to use pills in the attempt is not necessarily indication of him having a drug problem.
