  1. Call your great aunt Margaret and your grandfather Abner and work it out line by line:

    Abner & Margaret = siblings

    Andrew & Melody = 1st cousins

    Art & Melissa = 2nd cousins

Your father "Andrew" and the girl's mother, "Melody", were/are first cousins. You and the girl are second cousins. When (if)  you and she have children, those children will be third cousins. (They'd be their own third cousins, if you marry "Melissa".)

Second cousin is far enough away to date, if you are wondering, but be careful. If you treat her poorly, there will be some very awkward moments at big family reunions.

Also, if Huntington's or hemophilia runs in your family, you shouldn't date.

  2. Cousin

  3. Relationships can be very confusing. Try working it out with a chart like this one...

I would suggest that if her grandmother is your great Aunt, then her parent and your parent are first cousins, so you and she would be first cousins once removed. People differ as to whether this relationship should be second cousins, but as a family history researcher, this is the guideline I would use.

There are a number of relationship charts available on the net.

  4. kin.

  5. Some form of cousin. If they are the same generation as the person they are being compared to then I don't think there's any special terminology for it.
