First you should be prepared to read something you have never seen before.  While this can be difficult at first, it is something that can be erradicated by practice.  My advice for the cold read, is to hold your thumb at wherever your lines are at so that you do not lose your place.  Also be sure to use emotion with your read, it doesn't matter if the emotion is what the director imagines, as long as you committ to your choice and make it believable.  Good luck!
