  1. 4. Frederick Henry is really an alienated, sensitive man miscast in his role as a comrade-in-arms. He is prey to delicate emotions and ruminations about the relativism of experience. He is aware of his position ("I know") but that doesn't help him solve the problem. Moreover, without Catherine Barkley his life is completely empty. He feels separate from himself, as though one day is not a whole day but varies.

    5. Death is the one certainty. Life is meaningless, and humans are not given a chance to figure out how to exist competently. The staccato sentences deny the continuation of experience. There is only death, and it is final. The style conveys the meaning.
