So, I'm 17 and I've been dating my boyfriend for a long while. And recently we started having s*x, We always use protection and we're careful, but his dad, (i'm still unsure how he knows were having s*x, but that's not important) insists that I get on this birth control shot that my boyfriend's little sister is on, that you get at the Health Department.

His sister is never home otherwise, I'd talk to her about it, and...well, talking to his dad just isn't a comfortable thing for me. My mom doesn't know.

So, here's what I'd like to know:

Am I going to have to pay for this?

I'm unsure how the health department works.

What kind of 'exam' are they going to do?

I'm 17, can I get on this without my mom's permission?

(I don't want her to know, I don't know why, I just don't, She won't be okay with it.)

And Whats this going to do to my monthly period?

Oddly, I don't want to lose it.

  1. The most important thing to know right now is that this is your decision. While I do advocate using birth control, I also know that it's your choice in which one you use. For first time birth control users, the pill is the easiest to use and the most commonly prescribed. I have heard mixed reviews about the shot. My cousin is on it, and is satisfied with it, my I had a roommate that didn't like it all. I know some women experience more breakthrough bleeding, or bleeding in between periods, while on the shot, but I don't know much else about it.

I myself was on Yasmin for 3 years and found it to be much more convenient. You take it once a day at the same time everyday and it' somewhere like 99% effective. Once you are on it for awhile, it will just be habit to remember to take it everyday. The convenience of the shot is that you only have to get it every 3 months or something like that, so really it's up to you. Either one is effective, but you should be the one to make this decision. Not your parents, or boyfriend and certainly not someone like his father who has not say in anything about your life whatsoever. This is your body, be respectful of it and get all the facts first.

I don't know how the health department works, but I do know you can go to somewhere like Planned Parenthood and get a prescription for birth control. They work on a sliding scale based on your income, so obviously the less you make the less it's going to cost you for the visit and prescription. You do not have to have parental consent either, in fact doctors are bound by confidentiality to not discuss your health with anyone else. They will have to do an exam though, including a pelvic exam. They use a speculum and swab the inside of your v****a to make sure you don't have any stds or infections. It may be a little painful if you have never had one before, but it's over in a matter of minutes. I have a friend who goes there regularly and her prescription only costs $12 a month, but your may be more or less depending on your income. I would suggest going there if possible because it's a little bit more friendly atmosphere for someone as young as you are.

My last suggestion is to talk to your mother about it. You don't know for sure how she's going to react until you try. She may be okay with it, or she may be furious but either way you don't need her permission. If you don't think she will understand, then tell her you want to get on birth control to regulate your periods. Many women use the pill so they can know when their period is going to be every month and the fact that it protects them as well is just a bonus. Just sit down and have a chat with her, real informal. Good luck and remember it's your choice, don't let anyone tell you that it's not!!

  2. Birth Control will not do anything t your periods at all. But I believe the Health Department wil require a parent to be with you if you are considered a minor. And the Health Department is a free service provided by the state. Just go and see what they say. If you need a parent to go with you then I'd say it's time to tell your mom or wait til your 18 and then go get on it. They may not even ask where your parent is. All depends really.

Good luck though I'd reccommend getting a pill and not a shot

  3. First of all putting any sort of medication in your body is serious business and only you, and possibly your parents should decide what goes in you! Dont let someone else push you around.

You probably will have to pay for the shot unless you have insurance that covers it. Personally I never wanted the shot so I went on pills. There are other options besides the shot and you should talk to your doctor to figure out which one is best for you.

Not all states require parental permission. You would have to check your state laws.

Your period could change, depending on what you get so yu would have to talk to a doctor to know what to expect.

If you have any questions you can go to the planned parenthood website (plannedparenthoos.org) and they have numbers usually you can call in your area to find out all the answers to any questions you have.

Remember its YOUR body not your bfs dads, so dont let him be the one to make the decision.

    Good luck.
