A few extra pounds don’t matter (part 1)
If the measure of fitness defines the number of tournaments you win, then Golf has decided to go against this norm as well.
Golf has always been played with cut throat rivalry by the professionals and if we move a bit back in history, fitness wasn’t the forte of many players. Fitness was something that many thought to be useless as it changed the way the swings and drives were
played. During the first century, lifting weights was rather shunned as it was a common belief that it would make the turn difficult and they wouldn’t be the same they were before weight lifting.
Where some were worried with change in their agility, others used to fret over their change in swings. Therefore if you had some pounds back in the earlier days, you were probably considered way more powerful than the rest.
With the advent of 1980s things started to change a great deal and Fitness became more in demand. Exercise, therapy, work outs, healing, these words became a requirement much later in the years when Tiger entered the woods. With the arrival of Tiger Woods
on the top of the rankings, the world decided to side with his mind and as expected, victory was associated with one word- workout.
Till 1990s, Woods had Vijay Singh and Camilo Villegas following aptly in his league and they thus became a final seal to his ruling therefore relating Fitness with long drives and strength.
However, relating lack of exercise with success is rather imprudent. In the current times, there have been rather one too many highly ‘successful’ golfers that have climbed to the top of the world rankings without precipitating that much.
The following list includes a list of twenty five golfers who didn’t consider the idea of fitness as a factor of success as well as those who were famous before the current perception changed.
Jack Nicklaus:
We used to make fun of the golden bear because of his weight but the, now, seventy year old is a stark reminder for those who do have some extra calories on them.
Nicklaus is known to be a golfer who started from the top and remained at the leading positions literally throughout his career. The unbeatable, the terrifying, the golden bear has a total of 18 professional major wins and two US Amateur victories in his
records.
Despite the somewhat extra fat, the famous golfer became one of the highest record setting players in the entire world. According to his records, the golfer from United States grabbed 73 PGA Tour victories, 115 in total around the world, 6 Masters, 5 PGAs,
4 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, 3 Players victories and 2 US Amateurs.
Bobby Jones:
Standing at second last place of the list, Bobby Jones, being the stout golfer he was, became the most successful golfer of his time. Why successful? The golfer won nearly all of the majors from his era and remained an amateur.
The American golfer has a total of 9 professional wins and officially retired from the fields in the year 1930. However, despite his early retirement, the golfer managed to earn a place in the spot light. The golfer won the U.S. Open in 1923, 1926, 1929
and 1930.
