As a UK citizen would I be able to carry out a iternship in the US?

Do companies pay you for internships? Or atleast cover your costs?

You should talk to your adviser at school.  There could be a number of issues involved, pay being perhaps the least important.

Prolly, ask your department supervisor at your school.  Getting paid depends on what field you're in, teaching interns don't but engineering interns do.
