  1. All HDTV's will up-convert the standard def video from a cable box, DVD player, game system to it's internal resolution

But it's like magnifying a postage-stamp - you start to see grain/noise/problems that was not visible before.

So just because some up-converting DVD player says it outputs 1080p - it looks crappy compared to the same movie from a HD source like BluRay.

If you really want - the "Oppo" brand of up-converting DVD players are considered the best available.  But the PS3 or any BluRay DVD player will also up-convert - and play real HD disks as well.

So my advice is you NOT waste your money with Fake HD. Get a PS3, upgrade your Cable/Sat service and watch real HD.

  2. You can't make silk from a sow's ear.

  3. There are many dedicated "scalers" on the market that take a lower resolution picture and upscale it to a higher one. It isn't exactly Bluray quality but it is HD quality. They are usually pretty expensive.

There are a lot of DVD players that have 1080p upscaling built in also. That's generally the best way to go because they are a tenth the price of a dedicated scaler.
