I'm going to the Derby this year. I've done some checking around for tickets online. I've never been to the park, and was wondering about general admission. If I just do the general admission, what's the seating like. Is it just standing is it grass, are you packed in like sardines? Also in general admission, what's acceptable dress should I wear like a khaki suit, or just jeans and a t-shirt? And one more question, when it comes to placing bets, The only horse track I've been to is a harness racing track where there are never too many people there and you have plenty of time to walk up and place your bet before the race starts. How is it at the Derby? Thanks for all your help

  1. The infield tickets cost $40.00 and you have to get them at the ticket booths at Churchill downs. You can wear khakis, but blue jeans and a tee shirt's fine. They have betting booths near the infield! They have no seats and you will be standing!! I hope I helped you!!

  2. Wear comfortable clothes.  Don't forget the sunscreen.  We were red as lobsters by the end of the day.  I was able to place 2 bets all day.  You will be there with 50 - 60 thousand other people.

I hated it and I will never go back.  Dirtiest place I have ever been to.

  3. General admission is into the infield and you can walk around into the some of the other areas but there is no seating. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets and a cooler but they search you and take any alcohol you try to bring in. The infield is packed with people and you can only see the race from the TV screens set up. The food is expensive and they only have certain companies set up such as taco bell and a few other popular ones. Bottled water was $3.00 and they want to keep the cover for some reason. Mint juleps were $6.00 but it came in a glass you could keep. To get in to the infield you are herded through tunnels and getting out it is shoulder to shoulder for 3 hours.A lot of the parking is private in church lots or whatever and varies from $20-$40. Great Fun and a Great experience overall though. One other thing it was 90 plus degrees the year we went and being from the north and no tan, I Fried! Bring sun block. Any clothes go but wear a hat, everyone does.It is tradition.

  4. you can get general admission for clubhouse area and grandstand area on race day. no seating in either area. clubhouse is of course a little nicer. you can wear whatever your heart desires in both areas. you wont see the track from either area, but if you're willing to mess with crowds you might be able to get quick glance at some horses in the clubhouse area. the infield is not as bad as it appears on tv. plenty of room to sit on grass, you can bring in blankets & lawnchairs. as the day goes on all betting lines everywhere get longer and longer. by the 4th or 5th race we take turns going to the windows. can be a good 20-25 minute wait. in all. it's crowded, but i don't think it's quite the madhouse you think it is. enjoy it, you'll love it, and guarantee you'll go back.
