4. I have 2 cars from 97 and 98 and can I take them both in?

Ok I am planning on staying there a few months and Dont want to leave my cars here due to I have no where to leave them in the U.S. One car is my husbands and the other is mine. But they are both in my name.

  1. When you reach the border you can get a tourist card for 180 days...be sure you tell them you want the full 180 days.  after that, you need to return to the border to renew the tourist card if you want to stay longer.  The only other thing you can do is go to the nearest Mexican consulate and apply for an FM3 visa which allows you to stay one year and can be renewed at the nearest immigration office in Mexico.  However, you CANNOT get an fm3 unless you can PROVE you will have a monthly income of about $1500 a month for the 2 of you coming into your bank account each month...or you have 12 months worth in the bank at the time you apply.  When you cross the border you will need to go to the nearest car permit office...just across the border... and get car permits for the cars which will be of the same duration as your tourist visa.  You must have registration, title for each car, license and Mexican car ins.  You must have a credit card for them to imprint and save so they can fine you if you try to leave the country wthout your cars.  I don't think there whould be any problem of both cars in your name. You cannot move household goods to Mexico if you are just on a tourist visa.  You may take a car full of USED, personal items.  See 1st site below for list of Mexican consulates in U.S, so you can  call with questions.  See 2nd site for car permit info.  At the 12 mile inspection station, they check some cars thoroughly ( randomly) and others not at all.  If they ask your purposre in going to Mexico, just say a nice long vacation...to see a lot of the country.  I think the car permit for the 6 months will be about 50.00USD.  See third website for my favorite Mexican car insurance.  If you are only going to Baja or Sonora you do not need the permit. You will need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas, can order it from amazon.com...see 4th website.

  2. for regulations regarding: traveling to Mexico by car. You should contact the nearest Mexican Counsel office, by phone, they will gladly help. Maybe you will only neet one car, leave the other in public storage. You may also contact AAA.

When you cross the border into Mexico, nobody ask anything, is when you drive beyond the duty free zone. At the checkpoint you must provide documentation. The main Highways are very good but very very expensive. They are toll roads with alternative roads en bad shape. Have a safe trip.
