Is it possible to get a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Library Science? About how long would it take? What schools in Washington offer it? What careers (besides librarian) could I get into with those degrees?

  1. Yes, the MLS or MLIS degree is open to ALL bachelor degree holders who at least have the minimum GPA.  The graduate program is usually 2 years full time to complete.

You don't need to be a librarian after finishing.  In fact, most do not become librarians.  The program teaches you information retrieval, and in this day it is largely electronic resources.  So a lot of opportunities in law, medical, and other types of research positions with private firms.

  2. I have a B.A. in English and an MLIS from the University of Oklahoma.  Lots and lots of us librarians are former English majors.

It took me 3 1/2 years to complete my library degree, but I did it part-time while working full-time in a library.  I knew some students who completed the program in a year.

I don't know what programs are available in Washington; and I'm no expert on alternative careers, but I know that some graduates of the OU program are K-12 media specialists; work in development or sales or customer service for companies that cater to the library market; or work in IT.

  3. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING IT MAY TAKE 6 YEARS
