  1. The best salsa is always fresh.  My favorite recipe involves fresh tomatoes, jalapenos and garlic; use one clove of garlic for every 1-2 tomatoes and one jalapeno for every 5-6 good-sized tomatoes (depending on how spicy the jalapenos are).  Put it through a food processor or blender until it's scoopable.  Roma tomatoes are less juicy than others and are less likely to result in a watery salsa.

As far as store-bought, I like Tostitos, but I usually prefer homemade.

Ethnic stores can be really fun to explore, and often have cheaper food than regular grocery stores.  I don't know any specific brands, but I've had a lot of fun buying random foods and trying them.

  2. The best is freshest which means you make it.

3-4 roma tomatoes, diced very small

1med bell pepper, diced very small

1 med onion, diced very small

    juice of 1 small lime

    salt & pepper to taste

    finely chopped cilantro or parsley

finely chopped jalapeno or serrano to personal heat preference

mix it all well & you won't ever want to buy it in a jar

  3. pace picante is my ALL TIME fave. chi chi's sucks.  pace has a medium spicy kind that is perfect, and it's cheap.

and you can get it in the regular grocery stores

  4. The best salsas are the FRESH ones, in the containers, usually in the refrigerated section of the produce department.   Most of the jars of salsa aren't very good, unless you get into specialty brands.....

    FRESH SALSA

    1 bunch fresh cilantro, washed

    1 large white onion

    2 green bell peppers

    3-4 fresh tomatoes

1-2 TB. minced or crushed garlic

1-4 other peppers for spice (jalapeno, serrano, poblano, banana)

a little fresh or dried oregano

    salt & pepper to taste

2 TB. each olive oil and white vinegar

    Salt & pepper to taste

Pulse the cilantro in food processor until finely chopped.  Pulse all the other veggies until small chunks in food processor.  Mix everything together with the oil, vinegar & spices......
