  1. Seat Leon. Cheap, reliable, practical, economical, fast, comfy.... The 1.4 is a bit weedy, but the 1.6 and 1.9 TDI engines are really impressive.

  2. Vauxhall Corsas are nice, have been going on for years so vary in price according to age, so Im sure you will find one for your price range, they are small but roomy, if you get a small engine or even 1.5 diesel it would be cheap to run and its a vauxhall so parts are cheap etc!

  3. in my opinion the best small cars are either ford or vauxhall looking at the fiesta or corsa both come with small engines cant say cheap to run at present fuel costs but you get better mpg. insurance is in the lowest catogories road tax under a 1500 cc comes with a discount .and best of all these 8 valve engines in the cars have been used for years and just been updated as the newer models were released and are unbelieveably reliable replacement parts are readily available and cheap

  4. any thing smaller than a Mazda 3 would be way to small with a child seat. serioulsy..

a 5 door means a hatch back, thats not going to help you get in to the back seat to your son at all. It replaces the trunk.

I would look into a Pontiac Vibe or Toyota Matrix (same car different styling, and the pontiac tends be cheaper to buy. but both are toyota mechanically)

If you dont live in europe you aint gonna vind a vuhaxull in the states. (saturn models not with standing as they are being turned into rebaged opels. which are rebaded Vuhaxulls)

  5. Mazda 3's are a nice choice.  A friend of mine drives one, and I was impressed at the performance and comfort.

  6. A VW Polo would be ideal. Reliable, cheap and sturdy.

  7. For economy and reliability you cant beat japanese technology.

I would recommend Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris.

Both are small, easy to drive and economical.

  8. get a 4 door (i dont know of 5 door cars)

  9. Peugot 206 1.4 HDI 5 door.

It is small, has five doors, is a hatchback and does about 750miles to a full tank of Diesel...or 65 miles per gallon.

  10. I would prefer Honda or Toyota.

I think - you should also compare insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here: http://carinsurance.enacre.net

First time drivers usually have much higher rates than others. And it depends from car.
