A flying black insect with red legs, antennas and a tail or stinger (very long) any ideas wot kind of insect?

Its got very long antennas and a very long tail or sting not sure wot it is its black but its 6 legs are red???

  1. It is a rogue 'Red' cold war deep cover operative.

    Them or us - that's all they know.

    A better query is who's talking to their antennas.


  2. What you are describing appears to be Sirius Gigas, which is common in Europe but quite rare in the UK, i did see some here 18 years ago, it's Genesis is between the saw fly and the ichneumon fly, and as already stated the ovipositor is for boring holes in wood and laying eggs with.

    I have included 2 families  that have long antenna and long ovipositors (the stinger is actually an egg laying tube).  There are other insects that may meet your description but they are less common.

    Was the whole insect very big?

    The wood wasp is an impressively frightening-looking insect, but harmless.  It's about twice as big as a common wasp, plus its long ovipositor.  

  6. it sounds like a horse fly they can give you a nasty bite.
