Question:

A fresh play for a high school production?

I go to a school with an amazing theater department where we try edgier pieces than most high schools (they're fond of theresa rebeck). With this in mind, a friend of mine who goes to a different school (which also has an active theater department) has asked me for a recommendation for their fall production. I want to give her a few that aren't the war horses of high school theater, can anyone think of anything that's a little more interesting?

  1. 21A by Kevin Kling

The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin

both very entertaining and out of the ordinary

  2. Eqqus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Amadeus,  Man of La Mancha, Godspell, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

  3. Inspecting Carol- Great great play, especially good for theater departments w/ lots of good actors but no real standouts. It's about a theater company who loses money every year over their other weird pieces (i.e. a play on the effects of liver cancer), except for thier performance of A Christmas Carol. Since all of the actors have done this play for about 6-7 years, they can recycle props/scenery and still make a good enough profit from ACC and a grant from an arts society. BUT, since the company has been doing such weird plays, the arts society is sending an inspector to see if they deserve the grant. Then the trouble starts. Tiny Tim is no longer Tiny. The girl who plays all three of the Ghosts doesn't know any of her lines. Scrooge wants to protest various political systems/governments in his role and keeps trying to change the script. A new (and horrible!) actor arrives looking for a part, who everyone presumes to be the critic from the arts society, and the director tries to seduce the new actor so he'll renew the grant. And of course, there's the offbeat vocal warmups involving an imaginary lemon, and sticking it up your butt.

It's an absolutely terrific show, I hope it can work out for your friend's theater department :)
