Problem, the thumb rest is on the wrong side. Has anyone an idea how to modify? Can I just file it down or is that going to compromise the strength of the rod.

You probably don't want to hear this but fishing a baitcaster is one of the most difficult things to learn but you should. keep the rod and when you start taking precise fishing in structure and around pilings and downed trees seriously you will love how the baitcaster casts parallel to the water without the line getting all arced in the wind and over things then you have to move the boat and get it off. Baicasters also are a wench that pulls in the line and puts it on the spool without kinking and twisting the line. Or if fishing is soaking the bait kind of thing for you then trade it. even sell it on line on e bay or on Craig's list

  2. try trading it with someone or learn how to use it as it is... I would NOT file it down as it will ruin the integrity of the rod.

  3. Time to sell or trade for a spinning rod. Modification will be more trouble and money than a new one. Notice the size of the eyelets on the bait caster compare to you spinner. it just wont work.

    you get a baitcaster reel.

I like spinners too except for deep sea fishing then I take both.
