  1. Why don't you post this in a more appropriate category?  Special Education is supposed to be for questions regarding students who have special needs, such as autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, etc.  There is a Science and Mathematics category with a subcategory of Engineering;  try posting your question there for more, and more knowledgeable, answers.

  2. Just about anything, actually. Electrical, structural, aeronautical, they use it all.

Fact is, he would most likely be a contractor working for NASA (assuming he actually gets to that point; heavy competition). NASA itself has relatively few employees given what they do and most of them are administrative.

  3. That depends on what he is interested in--NASA and space travel involve a great deal of diverse fields.

Aerospace (aeronautical) engineering is one area, of course.

Materiels engineering is important (one key need is better materials for space craft--lighter, stronger, and more heat resistant).

Electrical and computer engineering--for control and navigation systems.

Plus a number of other fields. . . not all are "engineering; other important areas are space medicine, climatology, chemistry (especially physical chemistry), and so on.

I'd suggest he focus on his basic core curriculum for a coupleof years--but try courses in 2-3 engineering fields.  Having a little broader base will work to his long-term advantage, and give him a way of exploring his options and finding out what he's most interested in.
