to be nostalgic you could buy him an old type writer.  It would be a neat commodity to have as a writer.

Maybe a journal and a pen, with a note inside that says "Lets get this thing started :)" or something. That would be cute.

The old typewriter is a great idea, especilly with a typed letter remaining in it that has typed on it something like"I will support you in your dreams"

Don't get a notebook!  Myself and other writers I know all use the computer.
