A glance at Breeders’ Cup 2011
The 2011 Breeders' Cup World Championships were hosted by Churchill Downs on November 4 and 5. It was the 8th time the high-profile event took place at this venue since its inception in 1984. Both the days were packed with thrill, sensation, excitement
and upsets. A huge crowd of the global sport lovers enjoyed the live actions.
The opening day was full of upsets as some underdogs unexpectedly thrived to entertain the spectators a lot.
In the Ack Ack Handicap, Mister Marti Gras marvellously won by the narrow margin of ½ length. The hot favourite candidate, Gladding, stood fourth. The second and third spots went to Alma D'Oro and Glenwood Canyon respectively.
Another big upset happened in the Jimmy V "Dont't Give Up...Don't Ever Give Up" Stakes (Dirt). Will's Wildcat elegantly beat the 23-10 favourite, Wine Police, to finish by the margin of 1 ¾ lengths. Uncle Brent stood third on the podium.
In the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint (Conditions) (2yo) (Dirt), Secret Circle justified his favourite tag and talent well by winning with a length’s margin. Shumoos finished second while Holding Bullets grabbed third top spot.
The title of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Grade 2) (2yo Fillies) (Turf) was bagged by Stephanie's Kitten who beat Stopshoppingmaria by a narrow difference of ¾ length. The favoruite, Elusive Kate, finished 8th in the contest.
The spectators were left surprised when Musical Romance made a nerve-rending upset in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Dirt). The favourite of this race, Turbulent Descent, finished as down as 5th.
The 5-2 favourite, My Miss Aurelia beautifully sealed top position in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) (2yo Fillies) (Dirt). Grace Hall and Weemissfrankie finished second and third respectively.
Perfect Shirl stunned all by winning the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Turf) despite being a non-favourite contestant.
Royal Delta came up well to the expectations of the bettors by winning the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Dirt) convincingly.
On the second day of the event, there were held 11 races.
Salty Strike won Dream Supreme Stakes (Fillies) (Dirt). Afleet Again finished first in Breeders' Cup Marathon (Grade 2) (3yo+) (Dirt). Wrote brought home the title of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade 1) (2yo Colts & Geldings) (Turf).
The Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Dirt) was won by Amazombie. Regally Ready stood first in Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 2) (3yo+) (Turf). The title of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Dirt) went to Caleb's Posse.
The rest five winners were St Nicholas Abbey, Hansen, Court Vision, Drosselmeyer and Buckleupbuttercup.
The glorious title of the Breeders' Cup Classic was notched up Drosselmeyer.
As a whole, the event was interesting and exciting enough. This year’s edition of Breeders’ Cup is scheduled to take place at Santa Anita Park on November 2 and 3. Let us enjoy it.
