A glimpse at Mercedes performance in 2012 Formula 1 season until now
Mercedes AMG had quite a successful pre-season testing programme this year and have been seen as a potential contender in the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship.
Presently, the Brackley based team is standing at fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 105 points. Furthermore, they are ahead of Sauber-Ferrari and are behind Lotus-Renault.
Meanwhile, their driver, Nico Rosberg is at sixth position in the drivers’ rankings with 76 points between McLaren pair of drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Even though, he faced difficulties in the first two grands prix in which he could not pocket any points. Nonetheless, he made an amazing comeback in the Chinese GP in which he claimed his first ever pole position leading to his maiden race victory.
Later on, in the Bahrain GP, he delivered a convincing performance and secured fifth place finish after setting off from the same grid slot. Moreover, he struggled a little bit in the Spanish GP in which he could only secure 7th place finish after
taking a start from 6th grid position.
Afterwards, in the Monaco GP, he showed an impressive performance in the qualifying and secured an inspiring second podium finish. Later, in the next two races, he could only secure 6th place finish.
Conversely, he suffered with the lack of pace mainly due to tyre degradation issue in the last two races in which he could only score one point.
On the other hand, his teammate, Michael Schumacher is currently at 12th place in the drivers’ rankings with 29 points along with Pastor Maldonado of Williams. Besides, he is ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India and is behind Kamui Kobayashi
of Sauber.
The seven-time world champion had the most difficult start of the current season as he could only score two points in the first seven races and was retired in five of them.
Although, he faced some critical issues in his car’s setup and struggled with the problem of tyre wear out. Nonetheless, he made an outstanding return in the European GP and secured his first podium finish in the last couple of seasons after beginning from
the 12th grid position.
Contrarily, he was encountered with the same issues in Silverstone and Hockenheim as he remained unable to convert his competitive third grid position into a podium finish and secured 7th place finish in both the races.
Though, he was a bit upset over his uncompetitive finishes in the last couple of races. Nevertheless, he asserted that he is positively looking forward to fight back in the Hungarian GP.
“We started reasonably well and had fight at start with Sebastian, but from then on we were just not quick enough,” said Schumacher. “Starting third and finishing seventh is not the way you would like to finish but unfortunately there wasn't much more available.
I squeezed everything and every bit out of it and that's what it is. Let's wait to see what happens in Hungary.”
Meanwhile, his compatriot said that they need to keep on making the essential advancements to come up stronger in the season ahead.
“We're not as strong as we want to be at the moment. We need to work on that for now and try to move forward again because others have got away a bit recently,” said Rosberg.
