A glimpse at Williams’ performance in 2012 Formula 1 season so far
Williams has been deemed as one of the strongest midfield contenders in the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship with their talented pair of drivers, Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna.
Currently, they are standing at 7th position in the constructors’ rankings with 53 points. Moreover, they are behind Sauber and are ahead of Force India.
Maldonado is presently at 11th place in the drivers’ championship with 29 points along with the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher of Mercedes. Furthermore, he is ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India and is behind Kamui Kobayashi of
Sauber.
He has not been able to explore his true potential as he could only score points in two races in the first half of the season. However, he performed tremendously well in the Spanish Grand Prix and scored his maiden win which was his team’s first victory
since 2004. Additionally, he became the first ever Venezuelan driver in the history who won a race in F1.
It is to be noted that the executive director of Williams, Toto Wolff has said that they believe in the abilities of Maldonado and said that he has got amazing talent and capabilities.
In addition, Wolff said that they are looking forward to give everything to their driver so that he can get back in form and achieve good results in the forthcoming races.
“Pastor is a smart guy,” Wolff tells Motorsport Total. “I prefer to work with a guy who has extraordinary talent and an extraordinary base speed but who needs to smooth that out, rather than the other way round. He works well by himself and we then try to
create the environment around that.”
On the other hand, his teammate, Senna is at 15th position in the drivers’ standings with 24 points. Besides, he is ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and is behind Felipe Massa of Ferrari.
Although, he could not score even a single point in the season opener, nevertheless, he came back well in the next two races in which he performed quite convincingly and secured 6th and 7th place finishes.
Later on, he faced difficulties in the Bahrain GP and could not attain any points as he came 22nd on the charts. Afterwards, he was retired in the Spanish GP due to an accident during the race. Then, he scored one point in the Monaco GP with his
10th place finish after setting off from 13th grid slot.
Moreover, in the Canadian GP, he again struggled with his pace and could not score any points as he came 17th. However, in the European GP, he managed to score one point and later scored two points in the British GP.
Then again, he lacked pace in the German GP, nevertheless, he secured 7th place finish in the Hungarian GP after setting off from 9th grid position which is one of his best performances in the season so far.
It will be important to mention that the chief operations engineer of the British team, Mark Gillan said that they are very much delighted with Senna’s performance in the season until now.
“Bruno did an excellent job this weekend and this was the strongest that he has been for Williams. He was clearly happy and confident within the car and we look forward to seeing Bruno build on this performance going forward into the latter half of the season,”
he said.
