A golfing spectacle on the cards
The Barclays playoffs start today and once again Tiger Woods heads in to the tournament leading the FedEx Cup points. Last time in 2009, when Tiger took to the field at the playoffs, he was leading the points and went on to secure the trophy.
This time as well he is leading the points but chances are that he will be facing the toughest opponent and the man in form, Rory Mcllroy.
It would be a golfing spectacle if these two guns come face to face at the playoffs. Tiger Woods having the experience and class on one side, where as Rory is the man in form after winning his second major, the PGA Championship.
The tournament takes place at Bethpage Black where Tiger won the 2002 US Open.
“This is all the golf course you want,” Woods said of Bethpage Black, which also hosted the 2009 U.S. Open. “It is a great venue, great fans and just a great environment to compete in”.
In the last fifteen months, Rory has won two majors and now heads in to the event as one of the youngest players. He is currently the world number one as well but Tiger has history and experience on his side.
Tiger knows the threat that he has from the Irishman.
“I was always the youngest against – when I played against Vijay, Phil and Ernie, Goose (Retief Goosen). We went at it for just over a decade. I was always the youngest one out of that group,” Tiger said, knowing that his age plays to his advantage.
Rory, on the hand, is very optimistic about his chances at the playoffs and is also pumped up for the event.
“It really focuses you from the get-go, a pairing like that,” McIlroy said. “I feel every time I have played with Tiger, he is sort of brought the best out of me. I really feel focused and obviously want to play well”.
However, Rory does know that beating Tiger will not be easy and most probably, the crowd will also be rooting for the fourteen time major winner.
A mammoth effort would be needed by Mcllroy to win the FedEx Cup.
