A good Novel to read?

I have an independent reading assignment for school, and I can't decide what to read. I want to read one about the Newsies Strike[no it doesn't have to be historical] I just loved the movie and want to know more about it, but I only know of one and it's for younger kids...any novels you know, about it or not?

Maybe start reading The Cat Royal Series by Julia Golding. There are about 9 novels altogether in the entire series. But the overall plot is a young orphan girl living in the streets of London having adventures with her friends that she meets on her adventures.
