Question:

A good but affordable restaurant in London?

Dear All

I'm looking for one or more good but affordable French or English restaurants in London, preferably not in north London.

By way of an indicator of what type of restaurant, well something like the Aubergine in Chelsea, although that's £70/ head for haute cuisine by the look of it. So haute cuisine quality, Hungry Hoss volume! Ha ha, if possible. Happy to pay up to £50/ head before winen for top quality.

Why the fuss? Well I have a visitor who is very, lets say, particular. So high food quality, service and ambience are what I'm seeking Conversely I want to avoid c**p music, chains, badly ventilated places and being totally crammed together.

All help greatly appreciated from recent first hand experience only.

Incidently I've found all those food review sites hopeless. Having visited some of the suggestions on them from time to time, they are pretty much a sad disappointment.

  1. Sophies Steak House, Kings Road, Chelsea.

Good food, good atmosphere, good service, bit of a wait for a table though.

  2. I got the perfect restaurant for you... its French restaurant, and fits all of your preferences, and one of the best I have been to, and will surely impress your guests...

The restaurant is to die for!! Trust me on this one. Your guest will love the elegance of this restaurant.

Its a classy unique restaurant from the taste of the cuisine to the interior design, the restaurant serves 2 separate menus, I personally prefer the menu that is served downstair's. It has a wider selection than the menu upstair's.

If you pick the downstairs menu be sure to order one of the following: The lamb chops, The salmon served on pancakes topped with caviar, or  the steak cut to your preference

(when I ordered that steak, the waiter came up to me with raw meat and asked me how thick I wanted my steak)

The only thing I didn't like about the restaurant is that I couldn't get enough of their food. :P

    Don't forget to make reservations...

Name: L' Atelier de Jeol Rebuchon

    Adress: 13-15 West London WC2H

    Tel: +44 (0)20 7010 8600

    Fax: +44(0)20 7010 8601

  3. For French I can recommend L'Autre Pied in Marylebone

And for British a good option is Great Queen Street near Holborn

  4. For atmosphere, great food, and the chance to see a celeb... you can't go wrong at Joe Allen's.

Plus you can stroll around Covent Garden afterwards... always fun!

  5. You won't go far wrong in Langhams

What about Dover Street Wine Bar, in Dover Street if you like food and good atmosphere (live jazz etc.)

  6. The French House is a small restaurant that does do very good food. It is small, but we have never felt crammed next to anyone else. Book and ask for a table next to the window. This is my favourite restaurant, and will come in at about £100, including wine and aperitifs for two. We go here when we are treating ourselves.

Savoire Faire at 42 New Oxford Street is a treat to visit. Less formal and very reasonably priced, it is worth a visit. This is a good "Let's eat out tonight" place.

  7. McDonalds =P
