tell me if i am wrong but i think a good coach is someone who:

-knows the game

-plays the players he needs to win

-never really shows his true emotions

-has a killer instinct

-never lets up on a team even if his team is winning by alot

-never yells at a player for a physical mistake but does for a mental mistake

-has some form of bunt defenses

  1. bunt defense?

I agree with most of those.

The second to last one is a little tough to understand.

So is dropping a pop-up or throwing the ball away a physical or mental mistake?

I think a good coach is one that wins despite not having the best team on paper.

  2. that = a good coach

  3. Well that would be something you could find in 'coaching for dummies' but knowing what a good coach is comes from your own personal experiences. It's not something you can read in a book and its not something you can find the answer to on this board. And as far as the emotions go, well I think that is false. Look at guys like Francona, He has cried for his players yet still has to rings 2 rings.

  4. thats a good coach.

  5. Sounds like a good text-book definition, but here are a few objections:

#2: Using the right players might be good in the pros, but a good little league coach won't bench a kid if he's not as good as everyone else. I would re-word it like this: "A good coach balances the idea of equal playing time for all players, with the idea of playing the most talented players, in a way that is appropriate for that particular level of play.

#3: a good coach can show his true emotions. I good coach gets excited when his team does well. Smiles when a player has a big hit, and gets mad when things go wrong. (keeping in mind the 6th one about not getting upset at physical mistakes).

#5: Its true you don't want to let up on your team, you want to stay mentally focused, but if you are winning by a lot, it is appropriate to let up in the sense that you don't keep stealing bases and trying squeeze plays, you just let hitters swing away and see what happens.

#6: I'd say this is true for little league but not for the MLB. A good coach in the MLB can be someone who gets upset at physical mistakes. Players are expected to make plays and when they don't get their job done they sometimes need to be chewed out.

#7 bunt defenses? I think this is part of knowing the game. If you know the game then you know the best strategy for all situations and you teach it to your players. This covers all situations, not just times when you're opponent is bunting.

  6. sounds like a good coach to me
