I'll pick a best answer immediatly. I need a deep, good definition of 'protagonist' not just something you copy-pasted off the internet.

thanks xx

  1. a protagonist IS the good guy in a story. This usually means that its the person the story revolves around.

  2. The protagonist of a story is the main character; he or she is not necessarily the "good guy", but simply the person or thing which the plot revolves around. In most literature, the protagonist either overcomes some sort of conflict - internal or external - or undergoes some fundamental change - once again, internal or external.

To the answer below - once again, I say not necessarily. The protagonist does not have to be "good" morally or otherwise to the reader. He could be a liar, a thief, a murderer, whatever - none of which are "good". I'll go through my mind and try to find an example in literature.  He DOES however have to be the one the story resolves around; he has to be the one the story focus on and the one who overcomes an obstacle or undergoes a change.
