  1. Gotta disagree with the pawn shop thing.  It's true that you can find really good guitars there (or really rotten ones), but it's not necessarily true any longer that you'll find really good deals.

All pawn shop owners know about Ebay; they typically use Ebay Completed prices when setting values on their stock.  Furthermore, since pawn shop owners can also sell their stock via Ebay, they don't deal as much as they used to.

Since Ebay prices are often inflated (bid hysteria), pawn shop prices aren't necessarily deals anymore (although it's true they once were -- my best finds were a Hofner Beatle bass for $75, a Pete Seeger banjo for $50, a Les Paul low impedance model for $400, a Gibson Flying V for $200 -- no way that'd happen ever again now that Ebay's in the picture.)

  2. the best buys are those just out of pawn at the pawn shops. Go play all the guitars in all the pawn shops you can get to easily. They are usually the more expensive ones at bargain basement prices and in good repair too.

Most pawn shops will allow you to play everything in the house. It draws other customers so they can clear their shelves and have more money to loan people on their stuff.
