Onkyo TX-SR875 - I saw it on the net for under $1k.  Great features, sound and value for the money.

You can get a Yamaha RX-V3800 for just a tick over $1K on ebay brand new.  Its a $1700 receiver that is considered by some to be one of the best receivers before moving into the $4K range.
