I need to find a good place to take a group of college students to volunteer on a weekly basis in Houston. I would really like to take them to some sort of clinic/hospital that helps the uninsured or those with low income. Does anyone know any good places? I have tried the Salvation Army already, but I would like to find other places as well.

  1. I would recommend the Food Bank.  I think in Houston it may be called Hunger Organization of something like that.  They certainly provide a service to many nonprofits in your city that help the unisured and low income.  Sometimes people don't realize that Food Banks do not distribute food directly to people, they distribute it to mulitple nonprofits in the city who give it to people.  If the Food Bank there has good relationships with its nonprofits (agencies or partners) then by contacting the Food Bank you've really just contacted many organizations.  However, I'm sure the Food Bank would love to have a group of college students that can help around the wearhouse, prepare meals for the Kids Cafe, help with summer feeding, and prepare senior boxes for the elderly.  Those are pretty much the standard programs at all food banks and I think you would find the variety good for your variety of students.  Everyone could do something they enjoy!

  2. I live in Brookshire and there is a new boys and girls club that opened not to long ago and they need help so bad. There are more poor kids here then not. I know that Katy has a pregnancy help center but other then that you probably would have to go to Galveston Hospital.
