Question:

A good ski?

I will be skiing out west in a few weeks and I'm looking to buy a new pair of skis. I have a pair of Fischer RX9 in 165cm, but I want a pair that I can take with me that will still carve well but make short, snappy turns and go well in bumps. I was considering Rossignol WC 9s in 155cm. Would these be a good choice? I am 5ft 7in, 145lbs, and intermediate/advanced skier.

  1. well if you are only going out for a few weeks then i would not recommend to get a brand new ski i would say that you should rent a pair of skis or demo multiple pairs and find what you like. because at least for me and my dad a ski that works great out west will not be as nice on small hills if you live out west i hate you because you are lucky but then go ahead and buy a big mountain ski

  2. My dad's friend has a pair of Rossignol Bandit B74's that he never shuts up about how easily they turn.  He does pretty good in the moguls too, so this might be an option.  Go to a local ski shop and ask around a bit.

  3. I would demo skis.  Most large ski areas have a demo center so you can demo skis, as many as you want with only paying once.

The Rossi WC 9s is a slalom ski.  I would go for an all mountain ski for skiing out west, and longer than 155 for all mountain conditions.  155 is too short for someone your size, unless you are a  racing slalom or skiing on groomed hardpack (not out west) or a beginner.

I am 5'5" and 147 pounds, female, Advanced skier, but on the lower side of advanced, but better than intermediate. so we're about the same size and level.  I ski on 158cm all mountain skis.  I want longer ones now.

At many resorts, especially during holiday periods, many companies will send reps and allow you to demo their equipment for free.

Wider is better for powder, but too wide isn't good for carving.

On Wednesday I went skiing at my local ski area, Windham Mountain, in the Catskills, NY (they call themselves a resort, but they cant compare to the resorts out west and in Vermont). It had just snowed 8 inches the day before and there was lots of powder.  I demoed the Fischer Watea 78 (167 cm) and the Volkl AC30 (163 cm).  They were amazing and would be good for both power and groomers.

They both plowed over powder and carved very nicely.

I suggest that if you want new skis for powder, then to demo skis then decide if you want to buy new ones, and which skis you want to buy.  I also demoed the Atomic SL 12, 155cm, but it was not a day for slalom skis, way too powedery, but I did like them.  Tomorrow the first ski I will demo will be the Rossi Radical R 9s TI Oversize 158cm.

The Fischer RX9 165 cm should be fine for out west, but if you really wanted to get skis that are better for out west conditions, I would suggest  somehting longer and wider.

Demoing skis is a lot of fun

  4. I'm 5'5" and 145 and just bought a pair of K2's Burnin Luv ski in a 167 cm and I love them.  They are a womens ski so they are designed to flex and handle a little differently than a co-ed ski.  I too like to make shorter, snapper turns and these fit the bill.  They are a good all mountain ski that can handle the icy mornings and cut through the crud as well.  I found great deals on ebay that include bindings compared to buying them in the local stores.  I would definitely research the manufactures website if you narrow down your picks as they usually have very descriptive narratives on their skiis and you may find one that fits your style better over the other and fit your skill level.  If you still can't decide, than demo a few once you are out here as most resorts have a demo program.  Hope you enjoy the west!
