  1. If you're shopping for a Guide Book I HIGHLY recommend Rick Steves' guide for London and/or England (if you want to take day trips from London while visiting). You shouldn't need to buy both, if you are leaving the city, the England book alone should give you plenty of info on London as well.

I've always been a fan of Rick's books because he points you in inexpensive and fun directions that help you travel like a local but see all the touristy stuff.  He also designs self walking tours of towns and museums.  His suggested route through the British Museum in London is positively brilliant!  It points out where the best things are without getting you lost in the massive museum – with the help of hand drawn maps!  This book saves you the money of paying for a tour and you've got all the info at your finger tips.

Also Rick Steves has two children himself so many of the books take into account traveling with teens.  If you have iTunes he has free podcasts you can download as well.

The Rick Steves books really are the most thorough and interesting of any travel book franchise. They also seem to be the only line that keeps traveling like a local and expense in mind constantly. You can get used Rick Steves books on eBay.com, amazon.com or half.com. He comes out with a new version each year so you can get used 2006 or 2007 books that will still be accurate but will be a lot cheaper. Check out his other travel tips and info for London at his web site http://www.ricksteves.com

The Lets Go Guidebooks are also heavily recommended, but I find them a lot more boring and I've had bad experiences with hotels and restaurants they recommended.  I’ve planned entire vacations using ONLY Rick’s books and recommended hotels/restaurants and had some of the best times of my life!

  2. Try www.gostreetmaps.com/london.html

It has everything except restaurants and includes a detailed street map for London.
