I'm an English learner from China. I've been learning New Concept English book3 and I met a problem when I was doing exercises. Here is the question:

People ran away to escape the tiger____it was seen.

(a) however (b) wherever (c) as (d) where

The key is (b),but I chose (c).Why the correct answer is b?

Please answer it specifically and in a reasonable way.I'll be grateful for your kindness.

  1. Hi! I live in China and teach English, I've used the New Concept English books and have found that they contain confusing sentences and non-standard English. The sentence you gave is not a good example of standard English and should not be used in a workbook.

The reason the answer is (b) is because the meaning is, no matter where the tiger was seen, people ran to escape from it.

  2. You know, I think c is also ok but b seems to be the best one. It emphasizes that tiger is very dangerous and people is afraid of them so much that they run away as long as they see it.
