Although I respect the opinions of those who want to wait until their children are older to get their ears piereced, I have also heard quite a few mean things about parents who get their babies ears pierced. Things like it's barbaric all the way to it makes the babies/toddlers look trashy.
After doing some quick research, I've learned about something called a keloid. It's an over growth of scar tissue that can be painful.
A family member (teenager)had recently had one and had to get it taken off.
I learned that keloids can appear in anyone but are mostly likely in people of color and less likely in children which may be a reason why piercing a babies ears back in the day became popular although nowadays it's more for looks but traditions start some where.
So, my question how many of you guys knew about keloids? and how many black parents, hispanic parents chose to get their child ears pierced when young for this reason? I always thought it was like a tradition for African-Americans, Hispanics and other minorities but now their might be a medical reason behind it.
These keloids can get as big as ping pong and tennis balls and can be quite painful. Even though it can be painful and big, I imagine the big reason for getting them cut off is because it was more embarrassing.
Does this make those who think these things think differently about getting an infants ears pierced? Especially if the child will probably want them pierced when they are older?
