Salukis can give Greyhounds a run for their money.  Salukis have been clocked at 50 mph, slightly faster than Greyhounds, and it's reported that they can run farther distances.  They are very similar breeds.

Yes, both Salukis and Greyhounds can outrun SOME horses, although quarterhorses probably run a wee bit faster on average.  Some say that the occassional quarterhorse can reach 55 mph.  The dogs are better on the corners, though and barely have to slow at all.  A greyhound can go from 0 to 45mph in about 3 strides.  

A Cheetah can beat 'em all, though, at roughly 70mph.  

If you want to get off the land, a peregrine falcon can fly 200mph!  How cool is that?

Over extremely short distances, a greyhound can outrun a thoroughbred.  But I wouldn't say this is true beyond a quarter of a mile.

With greyhounds, an average time for a quality dog in a 3/8 mile race is in the 38-39 second range.  There is one word for a thoroughbred whose best time for three furlongs is in the 38-39 second range: SLOOOOOOOW!  And remember, the horse is carrying a saddle and a jockey when running!  But the dog is carrying no weight at all.  (Don't say the muzzle because those things are plastic and weigh about 6 ounces.)

Over a short distance, yes.  Greyhounds can attain a top speed of 45mph, while thoroughbreds max out between 40-42mph.  The typical greyhound race is either 5/16ths of a mile or 3/8ths of a mile.  The shortest thoroughbred races are usually 4 furlongs (a distance almost exclusively raced at by very young horses) and can go up to 1 1/2 miles or more.

horses can acually go to about 45 mph. well a quarter horse can. i dont know if a greyhound can outrun a horse but a quarter horse can beat a thoroughbred at a quarter mile race. a thoroughbred can outrun a quarter horse when going at a half mile race or more though
