A health or safety activity for toddlers/preschoolers?

Question

I have to come up with a lesson plan/activity to teach preschoolers a health (brush teeth, wash hands, etc.) or safety (stop, drop, and roll or stranger danger). I will need teacher preperation, materials, what the child will do and questions about what was taught. I cannot thin of anything or find anything on the web. Can anyone help me please?

For one.... a loaf of bread...a jar of peanut butter..and a jar of jelly.   teach them to make a small lunch and most importantly..show them how to clean up afterwards.  They must wash their hands before doing it..and tell them why they have to.  I f a child has to go to the restroon tell them why they have to wash again before handling food. The importance of cleaning up after is a great life skill. They will gain self esteem knowing that they did it all by themselves...and they did it right...and when they go home they will show their parents what they learned and make sure "mommy" does it right which is a great reflection on you as a teacher.

Washing hands is a good one.  You'd need  a dishpan or other small tub for each child with water in it, soap, and a towel for each.  Explain to them about germs very simply and why washing hands is important.  Then have them wet their hands,  distribute the soap, have them rub not just the palms but the backs of their hands.  Then rinse carefully and dry.

This one is a fun way to teach children to use a tissue when sneezing and coughing, and wash their hands.  Read a story like Germs Make Me Sick.  Briefly explain how sneezing and coughing spread germs, and tell the children we like to share our toys with our friends but we shouldn't share our germs because we don't want our friends to get sick.  As you're explaining this, give each child a tiny dab of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on their hands and tell them to rub it all over their hands.  Then go to each child and as you're talking to them, pretend to sneeze, holding a small shaker of cinnamon or glitter in your hands.  As you "Sneeze" shake a little "germs" on their hands and say Oh, I'm so sorry I should have used a tissue.  Now you have my germs!  You better go wash those germs off."  The kids think it's hilarious and they really have to wash well to get the germs off.  Another adult can supervise the hand washing.  Then throughout the day, be reminding them about the germs and telling them to go wash if they blow their nose, sneeze, cough.

As far as brushing teeth, I gave my students tooth brushes and an egg carton- upside down ( kinda looks like teeth). I gave them some shaving cream- and we said we were pretending it was toothpaste, then we practiced brushing our teeth- the egg carton- they loved it- Great for small motor skills

washing hands- teach them to sing the abc's while washing their hands- it reinforces abc's and washes their hands for a  good amount of time.

Greetings!  I am a preschool teacher and have covered many of those things.

For teeth brushing, we have the children brush their teeth just after eating breakfast in our classroom.  In circle time, we may read a story about tooth brushing and also use the large model of teeth with a supersized toothbrush to demonstrate how to brush...the front, the back, the insides, etc.  Every week, when we monitor the children, we suggest or ask if they brushed one particular place. Each week we change the place so the child eventually learns how to brush in each area.  

We also are mandated to have fire and earthquake drills (I'm in CA).

When we start our classes in the fall, the first safety lesson we teach is how to cross the street.  I usually put two lines of tape about a couple feet apart from each other and run them about five feet parellel in the play yard.  

We also have a few very basic safety rules that help the children learn to play safely.  It is a process that can take the entire year, but if you are patient and consistent, it pans out.

Stranger Danger - I have a very unusual bias against this program and do not recommend it personally.  This sounds very strange, coming from a professional preschool teacher, but I have strong feelings about this one.  If another teacher insists on doing it out, I will step aside and let that teacher conduct it or have coordinate with the local police department.  I will not participate in the activity.  If you want more, feel free either IM me or email me.  I will be happy to give you my own opinion.
