How does one score for a hole-in-one? Is it always -3, even if it's a par 1 or par 2 hole? Is it always -3, even if it's a par 6 hole?

  1. There are no Par 1's.

The only par 2's are at Mini-golf courses.

The most common hole to see a hole in one is a par 3.  Then it counts as 1 stroke, and you are 2 below par for the hole.

  2. The way that golf courses are structured around Par 3's, 4's 5's (in a nut shell) with a total round of golf (18 holes) totalling between 71 to 73.

The way that you score each hole is based on the number of strokes you take to put the ball in the cup. So, if you get a hole in one on a Par 3 it only took you one stroke, therefor, you would be 2 under par.

The way you score golf is by adding all you shoots and the lower your score the better:-)

  3. It depends on how you keep score on your card. On my card, I would record a hole-in -one as a "1". My best friend records scores in relation to par; so on a Par 6, he would record it as a -5; Par 5, as a -4; Par 4, as a -3(double eagle); Par 3, as a  -2(eagle).

  4. A one is a one and is scored as that...  Your total score would record that one stroke.  Where things get weird is as you showed.. how many strokes under par for that hole.. but that really doesn't matter any way.

Where it does change is how many strokes off of the par it will affect.  -2, -3.  In reality, a hole in one for a par five is pretty much unheard off (see prior Q&As.)  So, those are really the two probable outcomes for that hole.
