Question:

A home made gun?

I'm nearly finished building my first AK47 pattern rifle. I've had alot of fun doing it, and I can't wait to shoto it! For my next project though I think I'd like to try building more of the gun myself. Instead of just buying an aftermarket receiver, and basically reassemblying a Romanian parts kit. I've heard about a few black powder pistol kits where you have to do most of the work, but other than that I'm not sure how to go about it. Any advice will be welcome, thanks!

  1. you can build your own receiver for that ak. wouldn't that be cool? no serial #... legal too.  now, i don't know if this is a good idea, but if you're good with tools, here's a link for the "poor man's"bending jig. it'll run about 20 bucks.

  2. Actually, I would start with a kit where you have to a medium amount of fitting, and then move on to one which requires more skill.  A good place to start is reading this article:

That will give you an idea of what is involved.  Then, start searching the web for a kit that meets your requirements.  A great place to start is Track the Wolf, Inc.

  3. There are kits available that are as hard or as easy as your abilities can handle

From kits ready to assemble with just some minor sanding and staining of the stock

To rough metal parts still in the white and a hunk of wood that you cut and shape yourself

Dixie Gun Works would be a good place to start

    Here's some how to advice

    Stab Chop

That is basically what my jig looks like except that mine is set up to go in a hydraulic press

I bought that and every other tool need plus three unfinishe receivers and two finished for $100 from a guy going to jail

Don't ask, it wasn't gun related

  4. I can't think of anything to challenge you if you have already done an AK. Did you rivet your AK build, and replace enough of the Romanian parts with US made parts? I thought laying out all the holes, doing all the rivets and stuff like replacing the gas piston was pretty challenging.

All the pistol kits I have seen have been easier.

  5. As I recall UK during WW2 manufactured a sub-machine

gun, mainly off-the-shelf plumbing metal, that didn't require much set-up.  It was ugly, short range, and killed the enemy.

Suggest you do the nasty in-lieu-of nice.
