Question:

A hypothesis about 11:11 clock watchers....?

Many 11:11 people report seeing 11:11 twice a day, which could be a mixture of good biological clocks and sinchronicity. After years, they report seeing 11:11 on clocks even at different times.

Every number on a standard digital clock face contains the digit 1 except for 2 and 5. That leaves about 34 minutes between 11 and 12 on a 12 hour clock, (much more on a 24 hour one) in which a person can look at the clock and see 11:11.

For example at 11:31, the 3 is a 1 with 3 other lines attached.

Could the mind that is expecting to see 11:11 look at 11:31 and block out the extra lines that make the 3 so it reads 11:11.

Then when it changes, it would change to 11:32 and the person would be able to see the 3 again because the 2 destroys the illusion.

I'm just shooting out the idea. Anyone who has experienced the 11:11 phenomena, or who knows something about it, let me know what you think.

  1. I have experienced it many times and so has my wife.  My assumption is that there is a prosaic explanation, nothing mystical or supernatural.  I am able to catch myself on the road to self deception because I am aware of the mental mechanisms which cause it, but this 11:11 thing is different.  No matter how hard I try, I can't get out of my head the idea that it occurs many times more often than it should.

Likely explanations include: the parallelness of the lines can attract your attention periferally and unconsciously.  Let's grant that for a second.  Next, it may be true that we glance at clocks far more than we realize and have a disproportionate memory of the 11:11 occurrence because it seems significant.  Now with these two explanations it *still* seems to me to occur way too often.

So I see this as a great example of subjective error and self-deception.  It can be used as an example of why people believe in things like astrology and lunar effects on human behavior.  I know the bias, once established, can be extremely hard to dislodge.

  2. Uh, okay!

    Have a Great Day!

  3. arghhhhh Brain-overload...Too much for my feeble mind during nocturnal hours.

  4. I am also experiencing this thing. But I rarely see 11.11.  I rather look at the clock at 22.22, 23.23, 21.21, 20,20 . But maybe it is simply because we too often look at the clock and we see as well other numbers but simply remember those who appear misteriously.

  5. never had it happen

  6. you think about this WAYYY too much.

  7. I remember having visitors at 1:11 am. These people called themselves the guardians. I think it's an extraterrestrial thing anyway. Supposedly, 4:44 is a warning. Whatever.
