A large number of fish are found floating daed on a lake during the summer. You are asked to determine the cause of the fish kill. what reason would you suggest for the kill? What measurements would you make to verify your hypothesis?

  1. eutrophication and stratification leading to low oxygen levels. the algae grow, die, and bacteria eat it, using up all the oxygen. the water doesnt mix because the top layers are warm, so the bottom of the lake doesnt re-oxygenate.

    test for b.o.d.

d**n, i'm doing your homework for you arent i? lol!

  2. Someone dumped a chemical in the river.

I'd carefully take a sample of water and mud and test them to see what's going on in that ecosystem. I'd also contact the park rangers or owners of the lake so they can take proper measures to clean the lake up.

  3. A mass die off would usually be indicative of a sudden catastrophic event, such as low O2 levels or an unexpected increase in water temp above tolerable levels, or perhaps a chemical spill.  Water sampling as well as identifying which species were impacted.  Heat or O2 depletion may impact some species more than others, while death of many species point more towards a chemical spill.

  4. Pesticide from water run off from lawns, commercial properties or dumping of illegal chemicals. So I would say that polution and contaminants found in the water would be the main contributing factor.

To verify my hypothesis, I would have a sample of water tested for chemicals that are harmful to fish.

  5. First off let me ask if you mean dead, I believe you did!

Geo thermal heat can kill fish. Water being hotter than

normal! By the way there is a Web-site DAED.com

      DAEDALUS EXCEL

  6. Probably pollution

  7. eutrophication. i think.

the increase of sun=more algae in lake, somehow= more dead fish.

erm... measure amount of algae in relation to dead fish and sunlight/heat

    it's a thought *shrug*
