A late 10th inning win by Mike McCoy as Los Angeles Angels drop back in American League West
Mike McCoy hit a tenth inning run to take the Toronto Blue Jays over the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Monday, September 19 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Los Angeles Angels were looking to take a 0.5 win advantage over the Texas Rangers in the American League West. They were however going to face a tough contest from the Toronto Blue Jays, who were on a personal mission to depose of any top team in the league,
they went up against. Much to the delight of Toronto manager John Farrell, that is exactly what happened as the Blue Jays beat the Angels.
The winner came, courtesy a late ten inning run home from Mike McCoy on an Adam Lind line drive to fielder’s choice. The catcher had no chance against McCoy who dove in over the plate for the major win of the night.
The Angels brought in Jerome Williams to start on the mound. The Angels’ pitcher had a tough task on his hands as the club was trying to cut their deficit in the American League West which is being led by the Texas Rangers. Looking for a division win and
a post season qualification, the Angels were hoping to cut their deficit to just four wins. However the match defeat puts them down on five games.
The Blue Jays brought on Ricky Romero to start. The hurler was in from two consecutive wins and it looked like he would be able to keep the Blue Jays in line. He however finished on a stalemate with Williams as both players allowed two runs off six hits,
each. While the Angels’ starter lasted 6.1 innings, Romero went on to pitch nine innings before he was replaced with Casey Janssen.
The Angels began the game in style as Torii Hunter got ahead of Romero in the top of the second with a stunning home-run down left centre-field. His shot put the Angels 1-0 up.
Blue Jays were in great momentum as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Williams had struggled earlier and he had Brett Lawrie on second base and Kelly Johnson. The two from Toronto scored when J. P. Arecibia drove in a two-run RBI single to
right-field. The Blue Jays were up again and now they were in the lead.
Angels redeemed themselves in the top of the fifth when Mark Trumbo walked in to smash a homer against Romero towards left centre-field. With the score 2-2, things looked uneasy on both ends. Both teams tried to score runs but neither was successful till
the bottom third when Adam Lind drove in a single to lead Mike McCoy to a memorable victory in the 10th inning.
The Angels picked up a disappointing 2-3 loss. Scott Downs picked up his sixth loss of the season. Things now look grim for the Angels, who are in need of a miracle to make it to the playoffs, this year.
