Me and my friend live 12 miles apart. We leave home at the same time and and travel toward each other. I walk at a rate of 4 miles and hour and he bicycles at 11/mph.

a) How long after we leave home will we meet? How far from home will each of us be?

b) Suppose my friend bicycles at a rate of 12 miles per hour. How much sooner will you meet? How far from home will each of you be?

In deep trouble if this doesn't get answered.

  1. d=rt

    you:   d = d (the amount you covered)  r =4  so your distance = 4t (4 times however long)

    Friend: d=12-d (the amount covered by your friend) and r =11

    so to cover 12 miles is:    12 = 4t + 11t   solve for t

    12 = 15t

    t = 12/15 = 4/5 of an hour which is 48 min.  now take that time and plug into the related equation:

    you:  d = 4(4/5 of an hour)      friend: d = 11(4/5 of an hour)

    For b), change 11mph to 12: 12 = 4t + 12t and solve the same way
