A less expensive way to become a teacher in Australia?

Hello,

I have an offer to start a two year MA in Secondary Education in Australia next year. The only thing: because I am not Australian it's very expensive about 20k a year.

I have a BA in Political Science so I need to take quite a few courses to be a qualifed educator.

Is there a slightly less expensive way? Something like a TAFE course?

Thank you.

  1. You should be able to do a graduate Diploma of Education. In Queensland, QUT and UQ each offer a 1 year Grad. Dip. Ed. I know someone who did the QUT course last year and she found the standard of teaching to be excellent.

These courses will still cost around 20k per year, but there's only 1 year.

  2. Do a graduate diploma of education.

In WA, for example, it only takes 1 year to complete if you do it full time.  You do coursework and practical school experience.  When complete, you are eligible to register as a teacher.

As far as I know, you can ONLY register as a teacher with tertiary level qualifications - TAFE won't be enough.

  3. University is the only option to get a teacher qualification.A T.A.F.E degree will only allow you to be a teacher in child care settings. It is very expensive to study here if you are not Australian.Even if you get your teaching degree from here getting a job in the field from someone who is not Australian is also hard. Most education departments pick Australian teachers before they employ teachers from other countries.

  4. You do not actually need a teaching degree to teach in Australia - if you can convince an employer that you have the skills they might just give you a job (regularly happens when employing scientists or musicians in many private schools)

The catch is you need to do your BA/MA within 3 years or something - but you can do it by correspondance and because you are working it will lessen the burden.
