  1. If they're new then they're not Mongolian spots.  Do they look like bruises from common objects (hands, cords, hangers, etc.)?  Is there any scabbed areas where bleeding may have occurred.  Does she cry when they're touched?  Did you ask the parents where the marks came from?  Does she have siblings that you could ask what happended?  Just some things to think about before you react.

  2. Is she being abused or are they just a part of her skin like freckles......

  3. talk to dfcs, if u think they are bruises

dont risk a 2 yr old being abused

  4. In the mean time if they are not spots that is also typical places for an active toddler to bump themselves. I take care of three plus my own and their is ALWAYS at least one bruise on their bum or lower legs (aswell as lower arms and forehead). It would only be the back that I question. Abused children usually have bruising in areas that are easily hidden such as upper legs, back, upper arms, and trunk or on the face such as cheeks or jaw area. They typically also show regressed behaviour or timid behaviour, fear of adults and in children who are potty trained wetting their pants when they think they are in trouble, shy or shrink away whenyou raise your hand or suddon movements and they are rough with other children (also act out/role play feelings and acts with dolls)

I think they are simple spots that you missed though.

  5. If they werent there yesterday, then they arent mongolian spots. They dont just magically appear. They take a while to show up. They start off really light and faded, and then get darker with time. I would ask her parents.

Do you work for a daycare? If so, you are a mandated reported. You need to call Child Protective Services and have it checked out. If it turns out to be nothing, then at least you called to make sure. If it is something, then you will know that you saved this little girl from being abused again.

    Good luck!

  6. Yes, they are mongolian spots. You probably just didn`t notice them before because of the olive/tan skin tone that asians have. The blue seems to camoflauge right in.

Both of my sons have these spots. They are bluish real light and look a bit like bruises. They are very very common on the butt and legs and somewhat on the back and less on the face. My oldest has them on his butt only, but my youngest has them on his butt, neck and on the bridge of his nose.

Nothing to worry about, they say that the common ones on the butt and back fade and go away. But, the others usually stay perhaps fading later.

This is what my youngest`s spots look like same round shap and the really light blue that blends right in

And, here is a better shot I think for a lighter skined asian

I know we documented the spots with our ped at the request of friends who are Asian and were reported to CPS because of the spots. It is very hard for people who don`t have Asian kids to say whether it is a bruise or not - not to be mean - just seeing both sides of it.

If it were me I would ask her about it. See how she reacts what she has to say. Keep track of the spots yourself and see if they change. If they change locations they are not mongolian spots.

Quite honestly as a white girl I had no idea what mongolian spots where. And, was shocked to find them on my son`s butt! He was six weeks old when I first noticed them (the doc mentioned them at birth but I had no idea what they were). Its possible you just didn`t notice them earlier as well ;) Heck, if its possible for a first time mom I`m sure a sitter could take some time in noticing them!!

You can also google mongolian spots under the images link. You can pull up a lot of pictures and articles to educate yourself.

This article is wrote by a mom of an asian boy with mongolian spots.
