Hello! First off, thanks for reading this, and thank you a hundred times if you answer this question. I appreciate it a lot.

I'm 13, and will be going into high school next year. I would love to try out for the tennis team. I've been playing for a while and I am pretty good. Not excellent, but I make contact with the ball, and hit it inside the court.

So my question is...what can you tell me about tennis try outs in high school? This is my first try out for tennis. I'm nervous. so..what should i know? Such as, what will make me stand out? What will I need to do to make the team? Is it worth it? Thanks soo much!♥

  1. well, high school tennis coaches are a lot more serious than junior high. one major piece of advice, keep your feet in movement that way you can get to every ball that lands on your side of the court. good luck! :)

  2. consistency is the key to the try out.  If you get every ball back and go after every ball, you'll do fine.  Some people try to hit winners and aces, but if you get the ball back consistently and make little errors, your coach will notice you.

  3. Footwork and consistency are key. Don't worry about how fast you hit the ball, just work on getting the ball back. I can't stress enough footwork, you can have all the shots, but footwork is what that makes everything mesh together. Don't be nervous, just play a natural game, everyone there will be nervous so try to take advantage of that.

  4. Hi kristen,

What will make you stand out is having a really good serve. Most never do even if they  develop a fairly good game. So that is something you can practice over and over by yourself. My toughest task was getting the right follow through. It's so important. Again you can spend time doing that alone -  even hitting it against a wall. You have to get that right to develop power shots. And everyone tells you over and over watch the ball right on to contact with the racket. We simply forget to do that all the time and it makes a huge difference to your shot and to where its going.  Finally - It is worth it!  I like your attitude. It is going to help you succeed brilliantly. Wish you the best. M.

  5. Hi there! I was in tennis during high school and it was a blast. Since every high school is different, it really depends on how well the team is to begin with. If the school has a bad team, then you don't need to worry; you'll make it lol. But if the school has a really good team, then make sure you practice some more before trying out. Maybe even think about taking classes offered in the community if you can afford them.

What I really liked to do was watch tennis matches on TV and really take a look at the professional's form and try to copy their moves. I think that the most important thing is having good form. Having bad form is bad for your game since it's really hard to change into a good form once you have already gotten used to it.

Also, if you have good form, but you're not that great, the coaches will definitely notice and pick you over someone who is equal level but has bad form. It's easier to improve with good form instead of bad. Another thing, if you have good form, you will just look like you know what you're doing and that's always a plus! (lol, I wonder how many times I've said 'form')

I wish you all the luck this year!!
