Is it required to use guillemets (<<>>) in French? Is it that mandatory? Is it possible to use regular quotation marks in French or a mixture of both? Look, all I'm just asking is can we use both in French?

  1. No i dont think you can use that still.

  2. See : "Quotation mark, non-English usage : French" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_m...

  3. Hi! My native language is french and I can tell you that even if you don't use guillemets we'll understand. You can use what you want. When we use guillemets in french it's just because we're talking with a false word, for exemple an expression or an anglicism, so when we write these kind of words with guillements, it shows that we're using an expression. But as I told you, you're not obligated to use it. But if you're writting a serious text, it would be better to use guillemets.

  4. Usually you would use guillemets.

You can use normal quotation marks too though.

But it's different because in books they could use guillemets, quotation marks or or just "-".

    Ex:

    -Moi je suis petite

    dits Angela.
