Question:

A little more Robo Dwarf Questions

O.K., I have a little more questions for you guys.

If you don't know, I have to Roborovski Dwarf Hamsters.

1. My mom and I are worried about the hamsters not getting fresh air and being locked up in the basement for a long time. How often should I set their cage outside for them to catch some air? I would do it gladly if I wasn't so worried bugs will crawl in. Can hamsters take care of small bugs? How about big ones?

2. This morning my mom thought that one of the hamsters got out because she couldn't find one of them. She was panicking, called me down out of bed, and made me help her find the hamster. I was also worried, so I was digging around the cage, when I found it sleeping underneath the food bowl, underneath the bedding. Does that mean that it is cold? It is around 60-70 degrees in my basement. Is that ideal for a hamster?

  1. See my website ( http://roborovskihamsters.webs.com/ ) for all the info you'll need about Roborovski hamsters.

  2. 1. Basements have enough ventilation for a hamster.  I keep my hamster in the basement.  Don't take them outside because of the bugs and parasites that could get in their fur.  In the wild, hamsters do actually eat some small insects, but it is not an essential part of their captive diet.

    2. I know what it is like when you can't find your hamsters (mine does that all the time).  But hamsters are in ideal temperatures from 60-85 Farenheit.  And if they get cold they can just snuggle up together.

Glad to hear that they are doing good.  Good luck.

  3. If the basement has good ventilation and air circulation, then it is fine. Hamster cages require fresh air, good ventilation and air circulation throughout the day and night, so it does not help keeping the cage in a stuffy area and bringing it out to fresh air for a few minutes everyday. Better to keep it in a place like your living room etc. where the air circulation is good and you can interact with the hamsters more. Hamsters can take care of small insects (since they do eat insects in the wild) but they should not be exposed to mite type bugs which can get into their fur and cause them to scratch their fur badly.

It is normal for hamsters to sleep deep under their bedding since they are burrowing animals. Do you have some nest area for them like a small plastic house or an igloo? If you have 2 hamsters, put two of those in the cage and put some bedding inside. Your hamsters would soon make that place their sleeping place instead of burrowing deep into their bedding. Ideal temperature for hamsters is 65-75, so the temp at your home is fine for the hamsters.
