  1. First, ask yourself a couple questions: Can I tolerate shrill, incessant noise? Can I tolerate messiness? (and not just from the poops -- parrots ALL scatter their food when they eat).

Sun conures are beautiful, but if you cannot tolerate noise (and I mean all day long noise that you cannot humanely make it stop making), don't get one. Sun conures are by far the noisiest and loudest of the conures.

If you can honestly say you can tolerate noise and messiness, a Sun conure is a wonderful bird -- but don't say you weren't warned about the noise.

Did I mention they're noisy? Just checking.

THEN answer these other questions: Do you like to burn scented candles or incense at home? Do you like to spray air fresheners? Does anyone in your house smoke (cigars, cigarettes, pipes, etc.)?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, don't get a bird -- it will not last a month in a polluted house (and yes, if you do any of the above, you're living in a polluted house).

  2. Sun Conures are great pets.  However it depends on how they are raised.  They need alot of attention.  Including time out of their cage and interraction. They are pretty much like having a baby.  They need alot of attention and care in order to be great pets.  I have never seen a Sun Conure that is well taken care of bite unless provoked.  They are "screamers" and they do make alot of noise, especially when they want attention and youre not giving it to them.  I am not in anyway saying that you are not ready for a sun conure but think of a few things before deciding to get one:

They arreeee expensive.[cage, food, bedding, vet bills, toys etc.]

They can be very very messy.[unless taught early on where to use the restroom, but even with that... they will p**p where ever they like when you are not home.  They WILL scatter their food everywhere and throw it as far as possible]

They can be incredibly loud[I had one and our neighbor four houses down complained to my landlord about her sqwauking[sp?] when I wasn't home.]

They get lonely easily.  So unless you plan on getting another bird to accompany this one etc it will need alot of attention.

They love interracting because they are naturally social creatures and love being around people.

Unexpected things: I have a Sun Conure and a Nanday Conure.  They are in the same cage and get along great.  About five months ago out of the blue my Nanday conure began plucking himself.  He would pluck all of his feathers out and then chew his skin until he had an open wound.  We spent over $700 in a week on vet bills and tests.  Our vet eventually decided it was a chemical imbalance.  None the less we are still paying about $100-200/month for medication, vet visits, tests, supplies etc.  We love him like a child so of course we would never get rid of him.  But from what I hear it is very common for conures and parrots to pluck themselves.

I did not know any of this before getting them so it was all a shock to me that things like this happened.  Anyway the point of this is that conures make incredible pets.  Our's are starting to talk and it's like teaching a baby how to say mama.  It's an incredibly feeling but I would definately recommend making sure you are 23785327532857% ready to have another "baby" before getting one.

    Good Luck!!!!!
